This overhead lifting gantry kit is based on one used in the Brynllywarch Estate sawmill that was served by the Kerry Tramway in Montgomeryshire in the early 20th century. The gantry structure was constructed from timber balks and was very much a homemade affair. The winch and log grab designs are based on contemporary products made by Herbert Morris of Loughborough.

What's in the Kit

All components are shown in the accompanying illustrations and downloadable instructions. Including:

Gantry structure and supporting posts
Gantry carriage with model movement drive mechanism and chain.
Gantry trolley with hoist, hoist operator's chain and lifting chain.
Log grab.

Features

The size of the Gantry is ideal for a small sawmill or workshop and, if required, can be extended in length with the addition of more Running Beams and various Posts.

Alternatively the kit components can be purchased separately and used as scratch-aids for your own constructions. (See our website for component details and options).

The kit comes complete with operators and lifting chains and creates a highly detailed model.

The kit is non-operational, however kit components can be positioned as required.

Materials and Finishes

All components apart from the chain are made from durable grey SLA resin and are supplied unpainted for you to finish to match your model period and location.
The chain and small rods are made from chemically blackened brass.

Background

The inspiration for this model comes from "The Kerry Tramway and Other Timber Light Railways" by David Cox and Christopher Krupa published by plateway press.

The only partial photo of the gantry makes this structure and the surrounding sawmill a fascinating prototype, well worth including on a layout or diorama.

The gantry is also great for other applications such as a small workshop or factory.
